Spats

ThreadBanger: An Awesome How-To Site; DIY or Die!

The all powerful manifestation of the primordial divine, aka the internet, has once again answered our prayers.  Now, in addition to Instructables and Make, there is an epic, fashion specific DIY resource.ThreadBanger01

For the Edwardian Ball, we found ourselves needing instruction on how to make a spat, so we searched, and searched, and searched for instructions that seemed … inspiring.  We were about to give up when we found something that matched our desires perfectly.  An instructional video titled: How-To Make Spats (Spat vid here).  The production quality on this video how-to blew us away and we became instant fans of ThreadBanger.Com

We anticipate that you will the find the below video about how to make dreadfalls useful and engaging.  Do note that it is of a vintage which is no longer being produced.  The two dynamic hosts have since moved on for reasons unknown but the site, and especially the forums, continue to generate valuable content.

It gives a good idea of what’s possible though.  Check it out and tell us if you want more resources like it!

Top Five Fashion Accessories of 2009 Vol. 2

Welcome to the second installment covering some of the top five fashion accessories of 2009.  Volume two focuses on those accessories that were popular in the alternative fashion scene(s) this last year.

A reclining woman's sexy legs are adorned from ankle to just below the knee with corsetted, lace-fringed, black & charcoal textured spats. Truly stunning!

Thanks to Ash of Mechanic Organic Clothing for being the first to write in with these five favorite fashion accessories of 2009.  Check back to see more of her designs (like the underbust corset in the bottom-most picture) when her website launches this spring.  We’ll also be doing posts on the other two designers pictured!

#1 – The quirky ‘mini-hat’.  Crowns, tophats, bicorns & fedoras… the mini-hat is likely the cutest head-adornment the world has ever seen.  Worn by steampunks, lolitas, burlesque dancers, & festival freakers, this head piece lets you get your antics up without the hat-hair.

#2 – No longer for running around and waging war… spats keep the ankles of post-apocalyptic artists clean & protected!  Running to photograph deep in a swamp, hopping fences to fancy-up a dull warehouse wall, or simply to keep your ankles warm while dancin’ in the rain.  Fashion and function, spats got it all.

A bearded, mustachio'd man with a dreamy expression, a bright blue circle on each cheek and a black fadora is crouched modeling a decidedly feminine black dress-like vest with aqua blue accents and identically coloured velvety arm warmers.

#3 – Vests for everyone!  Over a collared shirt, tank top, t-shirt, blouse or straightup on its own, vests can pull off a huge variety of different looks!  What’s your style? Equestrian? Teacher? Faery? Victorian? Scenester? Freaker?  Everyone needs one of these bad-assed badboys!

#4 – The leather utility belt.  A ‘fabric’ becoming more and more widely accepted as eco-friendly, and by far the most sustainable as it only gets more supple and formed to your body with age.  The meat industry isn’t dying out anytime soon, and our leather is simply making use of a byproduct.  While caravaning across dusty plains, trippin’ around a summertime festival, or merely going for coffee – the purse and backpack can prove bulky, they can throw out your back, and just plain become a nuisance.  The utility belt solves all your carrying needs in a stylish, and comfortable way.

#5 – Underbust corset.  Not much need be said. Comfortable to wear, keeps your back straight when sitting for long periods of time, and all will agree: bloody sexy.

We’re excited to continue this series on your top five favorite fashion accessories of 2009 so email us with your words and pictures at the email address below the Follow Along links.

A sassy blonde model walks the runway during a fashion show wearing a tan tunic like corset that is short in the front and long in the back. Symetrical cords connect the corset to grey fur trimmed shoulder pads. The model is also wearing a grey chain-mail like bikini top. Brown panties peak through the tails of the corset and a gartered tan stocking top on one thigh completes the ensemble.

A Closer Look At The M4 Style

Random pics off the web can be fun, but for appreciating the subtle details of a particular style, nothing tops being with the genuine article in person.  On 11/7/09 March Fourth (M4) owned Reno’s face with flair. Two men towering above the crowd on their stilts. One flips the bird he wears tan striped blue pants that extend down his stilts he also has a black and white short top hat black fingerless gloves hand stitched double vests and an ascot the other stilter throws the "rock-on" horns wearing a large black and yellow ruffled collar on a black grommeted vest. He has on a civil war type Union soldier's cap and long black pants that similarly extend down his stilts.

The vibe was electric.  In addition to rocking a sold-out venue through two sets of marching-fueled mayhem, M4 brought it fashion-wise, dazzling us with the finest couture aspects of their signature style.

Hats, collars, sleeveless tail-coats, vests, bustles, and layered vaudville (one of the stilters was wearing five layers of clothing on his torso!), all well accented with miscellaneous militaria.  Anywhere there’s a gap in cohesiveness, throw in some punk-rock accessories or a bit of tribal flair.

Just about every article worn by the band is custom, some of it gifted by fashion designer fans from around the country.  Speaking to the band members is a crash course introduction to the underground burner couture network.

One thing that stands out about all M4s costumes is their individuality.  While you can tell there have been certain trends, all the costumes are highly individualized conceptions and the band welcomes all takes on its core theme.A man facing you and a woman showing off her rear with her head turned in profile are both smiling and posing. The man wears a black marching band jacket with silver acccents over a red fishnet top and red/black snakeskin print pants, a red and black marching band had with red fashion goggles tops off his ensemble. The woman's color scheme is white and black for her white fedora, white corset with black accents, white and black bustle, and shoulder holsters, her long black hair cascades down her upper back making her all the more beautiful. The couple is framed within a black and white striped hula hoop.

Their merchandise table was a veritable smorgasbord of wicked accessories.  Belt buckles, chain-ring M4 necklaces, custom designed hats by Faith, and of course, the infamous logo’d shirts in 31 different flavors.

The vibe wouldn’t quite have been what it was were it not for the fans.  We brought it too, with circus and marching band inspired creations of our own.

As M4 proved that night: it’s one thing to rock, and another thing entirely to look good while doing it.  If you’re near Portland, M4 will be celebrating their homecoming and the release of their newest CD “Rise Up” on November 19th at the Wonder Ballroom. March On!
